Robert Masaki Hechler (he/him)
Quantitative & Molecular Ecologist,
I’m broadly interested in the processes that shape biodiversity dynamics and resilience in an era of global change. I enjoy working on quantitative, macroecological research, as well as locally important applied projects, with a common goal of informing conservation and policy.
My research spans two main areas: 1) characterizing causal drivers of population dynamics and ecological stability via data synthesis and quantitative methods (e.g. empirical dynamic modeling), and 2) local biodiversity conservation through the development and application of environmental DNA and RNA methods. Please see Research for more.
I'm currently a PhD candidate, Vanier Scholar and National Geographic Explorer working with Dr. Martin Krkosek at the University of Toronto (Dept.of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology). Much of my PhD work is conducted in partnership with the Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw Fisheries Group and Salmon Coast Field Station. I previously completed an MSc with Dr. Melania Cristescu at McGill University (Dept. of Biology), and a BSc at the University of British Columbia.
