Robert Masaki Hechler (he/him)
Quantitative & Molecular ecologist,
I’m broadly interested in understanding the processes that shape biodiversity dynamics and resilience in an era of global change. I enjoy working on quantitative, macroecological research as well as locally important applied projects, with a common goal of informing conservation and policy.
My research spans two main areas: 1) data synthesis and time series analysis (e.g. empirical dynamic modeling) to investigate drivers of population dynamics and ecological (in)stability, and 2) the development and application of environmental DNA and RNA methods for conservation, particularly in wild Pacific salmon. Please see Research for more.
I'm a PhD candidate, Vanier Scholar and National Geographic Explorer working with Dr. Martin Krkosek at the University of Toronto (Dept.of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology). Much of my PhD work is conducted in partnership with the Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw Fisheries Group and Salmon Coast Field Station. I previously completed an MSc with Dr. Melania Cristescu at McGill University (Dept. of Biology), and a BSc at the University of British Columbia.
